The Science of Being Seen – Avoiding Car vs Motorcyle Collisions

Kevin Williams, Survival Skills Rider Training

The crash resulting from another road user turning across a motorcycle's path - known as the 'Sorry Mate I Didn't See You' (SMIDSY) crash - is the most common type of collision between a powered two-wheeler and another vehicle. We've known about this crash for decades, and in the early 80s, Harry Hurt proposed that the crash resulted when the driver didn't look properly. Other research suggested bikes were difficult to see. However, forty years of advice to drivers to 'look harder' and to bikers to 'ride bright' have had no significant effect on crash statistics. Moreover, the same crashes happen the world over. We need a new explanation. This is the Science Of Being Seen.

Tire Class: Get the Most From Your New Shoes

Dave Moss, Dave Moss Tuning

All tires are not born equal. There is no universal mold for any given tire size but we think they are all the same "size" if the label states 180/55/17. There are no bad tires with today's technology, and with a much better knowledge base we can get a lot more out of the brand and model we choose. Tires are the most expensive item we purchase repeatedly, yet we seem to know very little about them other than press articles and anecdotal evidence. Want to learn more about tires, what you need to know before buying and what you need to do after the purchase? You've come to the right place!
